SIKA SUPPORTS LOCAL LEEDS CHARITY’S DIY SOS PROJECT
Building chemicals manufacturer Sika has donated its EB25 sealant and adhesive together with its PowerPro sealant guns as part of a life-changing transformation of the Getaway Girls charity’s new Leeds headquarters, as featured recently on the BBC One series ‘DIY SOS: The Big Build’.
Getaway Girls has been providing support and empowering girls and young women in Leeds for over 30 years. The charity, which is open to all women aged between 11 and 25, focuses on helping them learn new skills, grow in confidence, build resilience, raise their aspirations and take positive risks to turn their lives around. As part of this it offers counselling and opportunities for creativity, learning and adventure, as well as practical help and companionship, making it a vital source of support for young women.
The charity’s existing facilities were no longer fit for purpose and the lack of useable space was preventing the Getaway Girls from reaching all the women and girls in the city who needed its help. Earlier this year, with the support of dozens of local tradespeople, suppliers like Sika and volunteers, the DIY SOS team constructed a new purpose-built timber frame headquarters for the charity. The new building includes a multi-purpose activity space, crèche, music/media studio, counselling rooms, office spaces and a full kitchen – as well as a garden area and parking with the whole project completed in a matter of days.
Sika has donated 288 cartridges of its EB25 ultimate sealant and adhesive product, alongside several heavy duty PowerPro sealant guns for application on site.
Darren Bunting, UK Distribution Business Unit Manager from Sika said of the project: “It was a real privilege to be able to play even a small part in this project. It was humbling to see so many companies getting involved – donating materials, products and their time and skills to complete this project in such a short space of time – it really shows what can be done when we all work together. The fact that the project is located in Seacroft in Leeds which is a stone’s throw away from our own manufacturing plant in the city, brought it home to us all the more. It’s fantastic to see how the new facility is going to impact the lives of girls and young women right here in the city of Leeds.”
